Severe ME
Domain: Neurology
The most debilitating form of ME/CFS, characterized by profound functional impairment and bedbound status.
What We Know
- Severe ME/CFS patients are frequently excluded from research studies, creating a critical evidence gap. Case reports and registry data suggest severe ME involves extreme sensitivity to stimuli, profound fatigue, and frequent inability to communicate.
What We Think
- At-home and remote biosampling protocols are being developed to include severe patients. Biobank efforts (UK, US) are prioritizing severe ME.
What We Don't Know
- Almost no controlled research exists for severe ME. The biological drivers of extreme severity are unknown. Access to research is limited by patients' inability to participate in standard study protocols.
